"I can truthfully say that I’ve received at least as much as I’ve given through volunteering. "

"...One of the best things about this church is its dedication to mission.  There are so many opportunities to serve the community through South Church, and in each of these opportunities is the chance to grow emotionally and spiritually... You’ll be surprised at all of the gifts you receive yourself."
(South Church Youth )

A Purpose Statement for Discipleship Education

The Board of Discipleship Education's ministry encompasses the whole congregation. We are committed to working in partnership with the community and to create a stimulating, welcoming environment for nurturing Christian spiritual growth. We recognize and respect that people come to the Congregational Church in South Glastonbury at different points in their faith journeys and from different traditions. Our ministry is to facilitate individual journeys in the Christian faith while building a sense of Christian community.

Discipleship Education for Children

At South Church young disciples are nurtured beginning in early childhood. Our clean, safe, child care rooms meet the needs of infants and toddlers during the worship hour. We provide a caring environment in which our youngest children become familiar with the community of faith through play, story, and song.

Children from preschool age through middle school are engaged in Church School on Sunday mornings.  A variety of activities enable young learners to become young disciples. In educational settings, in worship and in service to our community and the world, young children learn the stories of faith and explore the connections of faith to their everyday lives. Moral character and Christian values develop as children are engaged in Bible stories, the rituals and traditions of the community and explore spiritual disciplines such as prayer and Christian fellowship. Using a variety of methods a team of volunteers engage and excite our students.

Discipleship Education for Youth

Older youth may choose from a number of opportunities to worship, learn and serve and are encouraged to participate in the full life of the community of faith.  As choir members, teaching assistants, committee members and in mission, we seek to challenge and equip our youth to be actively engaged.  These young disciples have many occasions to participate and grow including Wednesday School.

Wednesday School

For more than thirty years high school students have gathered for supper and faith exploration on Wednesday nights during the school year.  For students in Grades 9-12, adult teachers provide activities and engage students in conversation designed to nurture and challenge faith. Exposure to Christian spiritual practices enables young disciples to strengthen moral development and inform personal decision making. Off campus field trips expose students to a variety of ways to be faithful in the world and engage students in local missions.  Confirmation education is a unique part of the Wednesday school experience.

Confirmation Education

Confirmation at South Church is a rite of passage from adolescence to adulthood. Students spend their sophomore year addressing their pressing theological questions, exploring the nature of Scripture, delving into the mystery of prayer, pondering the identity of Jesus, and naming those personal spiritual gifts they can claim and use in the future to build the Body of Christ.

More about Youth in Mission

Mission opportunities both local and global in scope form the foundation of our youth ministry program. In addition to Wednesday school, South Church youth have the chance to explore a variety of mission experiences. With programs that challenge youth to put faith into action, all youth grades 7-12 can participate in several mission endeavors. Youth can discover Christian living and the wholeness of relationships found in building a healthy community.

Opportunities for students in grades 9 and 10 -12 include a year end, week long mission trip.  Middle school youth mission experiences may include day long and weekend trips. Please visit our Youth Ministry page for updates and events.
