Nursery School

The South Glastonbury Congregational Nursery School is an exciting place of learning for three, four, and five year old children. The dedicated staff welcomes the children into a nurturing environment, rich with well planned activities. These activities encourage children to explore, question, and further develop their individual skills, while also learning to be group members.

Curriculum
Our center places importance on Literacy. Our units tie nicely to both fiction and nonfiction books and stories each week. Science is a large part of our curriculum as the children learn about animals and nature all through the year. They will solve problems through experimentation and scientific discovery. Nutrition has become an important component to our program, and the children will learn lots of imformation about eating healthy and exercise.

Social-emotional growth is enhanced through our program. Moral values are reflected in everything that we do at school. The children are encouraged to respect others as well as themselves, as they interact within a safe social environment each day. Our teachers take this very seriously and consistently enforce and example these moral values. At SCNS we take pride at building self-awareness and self-confidence in our students. We encorporate compassion, patience and acceptance of differences into our interactions with the children, and we encourage them to do the same within their individual peer groups and in their classroom.

We are currently licensed for 36 students per session. Our school is housed at High Street School directly behind South Church. We have a three day program, mornings and afternoons for four year old students. We also have a two day morning or afternoon program for three year olds.

Scholarships are a key way to reach out to the community we serve. Each year a total of five scholarships are allocated to incoming students. Some families receive full assistance, others partial. We are pleased to be able to make awards to both church member families and community member families as well.

Our Nursery School program is guided by a committee composed of church members, parents and educators. The current South Church nursery school committee is chaired by Matt MacEwen.

Our staff consists of Ms. Stephanie Letizia as director and head teacher. Stephanie has been in this field for over ten years in various programs. She has a special enthusiasm for helping each child discover his/her potential.

Ms. Susan Parmelee is head teacher. Susan joined our staff in 2003. She brings humor, patience, joy and enthusiasm to her role. She believes in the power of play and letting the children be creative recognizing the gifts each one brings to the world.

Ms. Mary Ellen O’Keefe, Katie Picard, Mrs. Heymann and Mrs. Gourley are assistant teachers. They all bring a special understanding of the preschool child as an individual to our program.

Ms. Sue Thompson is program assistant. The goal of all our teachers is to welcome and honor each child and encourage each to discover their special gifts.
